Chen Pan Ling (1891-1967)
Born in Henan Province, his contributions were primarily during following the Nationalist period of Chinese history, which began in 1912. The Central Martial Arts Institute was founded by Chang Chih Chinag in 1928. The institute was in Nanking, the capitol of China at the time. The institute used the term Zhoug Guo Kuo Shu (Chinese National Martial Arts) to replace Wushu, which is generic term for martial arts that does not address its Chinese origin. The idea was to stress the importance of martial arts as a national priority. Chen was vice president of the Central Martial Arts Institute, and chaired a committee that met at Chunking, China in 1941. This committee sought to standardize the martial arts, taking the best of the various styles to develop a single national system.
